February News 2024

Midway through January, we returned to New Zealand after an incredible two-week journey in the Philippines. This marked our first trip back since the post-Covid era, and we were blown away by the amazing experiences we encountered.

Upon our arrival in Agoo, we wasted no time and headed straight to our school, Hands of Hope Faith Academy (HOHFA). A warm welcome awaited us, with the children eagerly rushing out to meet us. Each grade prepared a special dance item for us, making our return even more memorable. Over the following two weeks, I (Duane) spent extensive time at the school, engaging in discussions with Dr. Gapoy. In a previous newsletter, I mentioned the appointment of Dr. Gapoy as the school’s leader by the School Board at the beginning of the 2024/25 school year. With over 35 years of experience in the Philippines public schools, we believed she was the perfect person to help us pursue our vision of academic excellence. Dr. Gapoy has since implemented numerous positive changes at the school, benefiting both teachers and students alike. Teachers have experienced improvements in their classroom practices through regular observations and personal development sessions. Teachers have also seen positive changes in student behaviour and academic abilities, with daily remedial classes offered during lunchtime and after school for those who need extra support. During our discussions, Dr. Gapoy and I explored the feasibility of constructing a roof over our basketball court. This exciting project would provide numerous benefits, including a venue for official school programs and protection from the hot sun during events like Graduation, Foundation Day, and Buwan ng Wika. Additionally, it would offer a covered space for children to play during the rainy season. Although we had previously discussed this project, concerns about costs prevented us from pursuing it. With Dr. Gapoy on board, we have decided that the time is right. An engineer will design and estimate the costs, and we will begin fundraising. Stay tuned for more details!

During our out time at HOHFA we took the opportunity to sponsor lunch for the 118 students and 10 staff members. The menu included chicken, rice, vegetables, and everyone’s favourite – ice cream for dessert! The joy on their faces was truly heart-warming.

Jenny focused her time on small groups and church leadership, collaborating with local leaders to expand the number of groups ministering to those in villages that need prayer. Looking ahead, our focus over the next 12 months will be on training new leaders to make an even greater impact. We also had the privilege of ministering on Sundays, where we were in awe of our young people leading worship. Click here to view the photos.

Our trip included a quick visit to Baguio to connect with Brent School and meet Dr. Celeste, the Principal, and Mila, our Accountant. We also seized the opportunity to purchase essential items for our churches that were unavailable locally.

In conclusion, our short time in the Philippines was incredibly fulfilling. It felt as though we had never left, connecting with the people right away. We were thrilled to witness our underlying ministry philosophy in action – Filipinos running and growing the ministry. Jenny and I left the school very impressed, confident that it is in good hands, and the visible improvements we observed will continue. Thank you for your ongoing support, and we look forward to sharing more updates with you soon.

Blessings
