Shortly after a 2 week missions trip to the Philippines in 2009 Duane & Jenny Newport established Hands of Hope Ministries. It was during this visit that they felt the call of God to return to the Philippines long term.
The purpose of Hands of Hope Ministries is twofold:
1. Spiritually - bringing people into an encounter with God
2. Practically - help the poor and needy
Poverty in the Philippines is widespread. Nationwide, one can compare poverty incidence rates of 21.5% in urban areas to 50.7% rate in rural areas.
An estimated 11 women die every day from complications of child birth. Most maternal deaths occur due to extensive bleeding, obstructed labour and widespread infection. Many of these could be prevented if more women had access to prenatal care and health facilities had more skilled birth attendants. Moreover, facilities in impoverished and far-flung areas need more comprehensive emergency obstetric services.
But the message of the Gospel shows that the poor are valuable in the eyes of God. Our vision is to see the Philippines transformed to God's Kingdom values in all aspects and at all levels of society, bringing freedom and healing to people living in poverty.
Duane has been involved in full time pastoral ministry for over 15 years. His responsibilities have included, pastoral care and counseling, preaching, principal of the Bible School, training and equipping leaders and much more. During 2006 he resigned from staff at Takapuna Assemblies of God (now Harbourside Church) to take up the full time role as Director of Cleansing Stream Ministries. He has led Cleansing Stream Ministries since its initial introduction to New Zealand in 1999 until 2010. During this time Cleansing Stream Ministries NZ has grown significantly and is working with over 160 churches, from a variety of dominations and backgrounds. It also has a volunteer staff of over 300 people. Duane enjoys coaching Joe's cricket team in the summer and supporting his hockey matches in the winter.
Jenny trained as a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology in New Zealand and England. She was working as an Associate Professor with the University of Auckland and the Clinical Director of Gynaecology at North Shore Hospital prior to resigning to move to the Philippines. Jenny has been involved in teaching and training midwives, GPs, medical students and trainee specialists for over 20 years. She has great delight in helping people reach their potential and to see them function successfully in their chosen career. Jenny has been an active member of a church wherever she has lived and has contributed in prayer, worship teams and helping wherever help is needed. As well as working with Duane in Cleansing Stream Ministries as other duties has allowed, she is an avid fan at Joseph’s cricket matches and has enjoyed being a ‘driver’ on Joseph’s school’s walking school bus
Joseph is an on-fire for God 7 year old who regularly hears from the Holy Spirit. He has a real heart of compassion for the street kids as well as others in need. Joseph first felt the call to the Philippines in 2007. One night before going to sleep he asked his mother if they could sell the house and move to the Philippines. It took Mum and Dad two years to do it :-) Joseph loves playing cricket and hockey and hanging out with his friends. Click here to check out Joe's blog and photo's.
